LinkedIn

I had a LinkedIn profile before the class required it. My Current job at Northwestern Mutual requires it's employees to have an account. I think requiring an account when starting a job is great idea to get connect to other in your career and previous jobs. I’m not sure how I feel about the social site. I haven't received any leads on jobs or had anyone posting positions. Not a lot of my peers have a profile on the site, so I’m having a hard time on ways to use the website to the best of my ability. I wish the site had different option to get to know other professionals in the field desired. Hopefully I can learn more about the site in this course. If anyone has any suggestion on what I can do to better connect with business professionals on the site, would be great.

  1. I feel the same way as you. I have profile but am not sure how to use it to better position myself for a career opportunity. I think the key is to get as many connections as possible. I am also look for ideas on how to use it.

  2. I'm with you three. I honestly have no idea how it works or what to do with it. Are you supposed to go out and find the employers, or does the site make it easy for them to come find you? However, I felt the same way about Facebook when I first got one - I was literally posting things on my own wall thinking I was talking to other people - and now I'm a master at it. So hopefully LinkedIn will become easier to use as we deal with it more.

  3. I like that you brought this up. I think it's really great the NWM has you make an account. I also developed an account before the class. At first, I thought that the job discussions would just come to me. In fact, recently, I started a discussion through one of the groups I am a part of (adpi)about job opprotunities. I had 3 alumni from other states get back to me and talk with me on what they do and how I can get involved. It definately takes time and research on your part, but it also helps build your network on Linkedin. Also, there is a tab that says jobs that serves as a search engine for you to see what jobs are available. This site isnt for everyone, but out of al the social media- Linkedin, twitter, and facebook take the cake.
